Politics & Government

There is something wrong with a city when their motive for taking someone to court is to extract revenge, rather than see justice served.

My father recently went to court on a ticket. Through a misunderstanding on his accident report, they were trying to try him for obstruction of justice. He made a mistake while filling out an accident report, and corrected it before it was even filed. He also informed the officer of the mistake. The officer, rather than asking for an explanation, became angry and started issuing tickets. I was the eyewitness to the accident, and when I talked to the officer, he acted like a bully, and threatended to arrest me. I responded by filing a complaint against the officer, and the Lt. of the Lehi police department tried to tell me that I was obstructing justice. He mis-interpreted the Utah State Code in doing so, and when I disagreed with him on his interpretation, he yelled at me. The whole thing became so ridiculous that I finally just washed my hands of the whole affair. The city prosecutor, who was quite hostile for some reason, changed the charges to Obstruction of Justice. My father, rather than drain more hours out of his day, pleaded no contest, and the judge initially set the fine at $317 dollars (the maximum is $617), and then reduced it another $200 dollars. He told both my parent that the charge was ridiculous, and that was why he reduced the fine so much. Whatever the prosecutor said, it was clear that his intent was not justice, but revenge or vindication of some sort. To be fair, a Lehi police officer was killed a few years back, and perhaps that is why they are trying to take this tough hard-line stance against ordinary law-abiding citizens, but I have a news flash for the Lehi City prosecutor and the Lehi City PD: Lehi isn't New York City, and you're not actors on NYPD Blue. So cut all the macho stuff, and get back to being the public servants you are paid to be. You are, or should be, above bullying and seeking after revenge.
